1. Credit Rating Information Services of India Limited (CRISIL) announced to appoint Ashu Suyash as the Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the company. Her appointment was confirmed by the Board of Directors of the Company. She will succeed Roopa Kudva and will take charge from June 2015.

3. Senior IAS officer T.V. Somanathan was appointed as Joint Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office. Somanathan, a 1987 batch IAS officer of Tamil Nadu cadre, is working as Director, Joint Secretary level, in the World Bank in Washington since May 12, 2011.

Uttar Pradesh born Khator, University of Houston President and System Chancellor since 2008, became board chair during ACE’s 97th Annual Meeting in Washington, DC.

5. India’s Baljinder Singh bagged a bronze medal in the men’s section of the 10th Asian 20km Race Walking Championships at Nomi City in Japan to qualify for the World Championships. The Punjab race walker clocked a modest time of 1 hour 22 minutes 58 seconds to finish third in the competition. He has a personal best of 1:22.12sec. The 28-year-old thus became only the second Indian to win a medal in the prestigious championships after Gurmeet Singh won a silver in 2012 besides two bronze medals in 2013 and 2014 editions.
भारत के बलजिंदर सिंह ने जापान के नोमी सिटी में दसवीं एशियाई 20 किमी पैदल चाल चैंपियनशिप के पुरूष वर्ग में कांस्य पदक जीतकर विश्व चैंपियनशिप के लिये क्वालीफाई किया। पंजाब के बलजिंदर ने एक घंटा, 22 मिनट और 58 सेकेंड का समय लेकर तीसरा स्थान हासिल किया। उनका व्यक्तिगत सर्वश्रेष्ठ प्रदर्शन एक घंटा 22 मिनट 12 सेकेंड है। यह 28 वर्षीय एथलीट इस प्रतिष्ठित चैंपियनशिप में पदक जीतने वाला केवल दूसरा भारतीय है। उनसे पहले गुरमीत सिंह ने 2012 में रजत जबकि 2013 और 2014 में कांस्य पदक जीते थे।
6. Noted Gandhian and former Chancellor of Gujarat Vidyapith, Narayan Desai, passed away in a private hospital in Surat. 90 year old Desai was the son of Mahatma Gandhi’s diarist Mahadev Desai.

7. India won the Hero women’s Hockey World League Round 2. In the final held at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi, India defeated Poland by 3-1 to claim the title. Malaysia was placed third in the tournament and was followed by Thailand, Russia, Kazakhstan, Ghana and Singapore.
भारत ने महिलाओं की हीरो हॉकी वर्ल्ड लीग (राउण्ड-II) का खिताब जीता। दिल्ली के मेजर ध्यानचंद नेशनल स्टेडियम में सम्पन्न इस खिताब के फाइनल में मेजबान भारत ने पोलैण्ड को 3-1 से हराकर खिताब अपने नाम कर लिया। इस प्रतियोगिता में मलेशिया को तीसरा स्थान हासिल हुआ तथा इसके बाद क्रमश: थाईलैण्ड, रूस, कजाकिस्तान, घाना और सिंगापुर का स्थान रहा।

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has eased the norms for payments made using NFC-based or contactless cards and said that transactions below Rs. 2,000 will not need a additional factor of authentication. The additional factor of authentication the RBI had earlier mandated was entering a PIN or an one-time password.
आरबीआई ने 2000 रुपए से कम तक के कार्ड ट्रांजेक्शन के लिए पिन की जरूरत समाप्त करने का फैसला किया है। इसमें कहा गया है कि क्रेडिट या डेबिट कार्ड से 2000 रुपए तक का ट्रांजेक्शन करने पर ग्राहक को ट्रांजेक्शन पूरा करने के लिए पिन नहीं डालना होगा।

Hitachi India Limited and Siemens Limited signed a MoU with CII in the capital to form a consortium that would create pilots and replicate them throughout the country for setting up 100 smart cities. The MoU was signed on behalf of Hitachi by their MD, Mr. Ichiro Iino and MD, Siemens Ltd, Mr. Sunil Mathur and DG, CII Mr. Chandrajit Banerjee in the presence of DIPP Secretary Mr. Amitabh Kant.

2. The Reserve Bank of India has entered a $1.5 billion currency swap agreement with the central bank of Sri Lanka. This will help keep the Sri Lankan rupee stable. Sri Lanka rupee has been under pressure since January 2015 and fallen around 1.5% so far this year despite the fact that the Sri Lankan central bank defended it with selling dollars.

3. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Indian Army and HDFC Bank on the Defence Salary Package. The first MoU between HDFC Bank and the Indian Army was signed in 2011 and was valid for a period of three years. The revised MoU is tailor made to suit the requirements of serving soldiers, pensioners and families. The basic features of the MoU are free drafts, free cheque books, free funds transfers to any bank in India through RTGS / NEFT and free ATM cards.

Pakistan Successfully Tests First Indigenous Armed Drone
Pakistan has successfully test fired an indigenously-developed armed drone Burraq and its laser guided missile Barq. By successfully testing of Burraq, Pakistan became the 9th country in the World to develop an unmanned combat aerial vehicle (UCAV) domestically.
Former President Mohamed Nasheed Sentenced To 13 year Imprisonment
Former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed was sentenced to 13-year imprisonment by country’s criminal court under the anti-terrorism laws. Nasheed, the country’s first democratically elected leader,was charged under the island nation’s Anti-Terrorism Act, 1990 for his order to arrest a Criminal Court judge Abdulla Mohamed in 2012. The case against Nasheed was based on the investigation report of the Human Rights Commission of Maldives into kidnapping of the Judge. He was arrested for same charges on 22 February 2015 after court had issued warrant to stop him fleeing the country.
Japan and France Signed Defence Agreement
Japan and France signed a defense agreement that is expected to pave the way for the implementation of projects between the two countries. The agreement will involve the transfer of defense equipment and technology. In 2014, Japan effectively lifted a self-imposed ban on the overseas transfer of arms and related technology.
Mary Kom named as Brand Ambassador for the North East
The government of India has appointed world boxing champion Mary Kom as a Brand Ambassador for the North East states. The name of Mary Kom has been selected for the promotion of culture and tourism in the North East states of India. Minister of Development of North Eastern Region Jitendra Singh announced this at a two-day business summit in New Delhi.

2. India has named Arun Singh, currently its Ambassador to France, as its next top envoy to the US and has send an agreement in this regard to the American government. A 1979-batch IFS officer, Singh will be replacing S. Jaishankar, who was appointed as Foreign Secretary on January 28 this year.

He was elected as President at the BCCI Annual General Meeting held at Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Dalmiya will succeed N. Srinivasan who was barred from contesting BCCI Presidential election by Supreme Court over the corruption and IPL spot fixing scandal.

4. Roger Federer of Switzerland won the ATP Tennis Championship Men’s single title held in Dubai. In the final match, he defeated Novak Djokovic of Serbia by score of 6–3, 7–5. It was Roger Federer’s seventh win in Dubai ATP Tennis men’s single’s title.

5. Romanian professional tennis player Simona Halep won the ATP Tennis Championship women’s single title held in Dubai. In the final match, she defeated Karolína Plíšková of Czech Republic by score of 6-4, 7-6.

6. World’s first electric satellites were successfully lifted off by a Space Exploration (SpaceX) Technologies rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, United States. The rocket was carrying two all-electric commercial satellites built by Boeing. The satellites are owned by the French satellite provider Eutelsat and Asia Broadcast Satellite (ABS).

7. China has appointed Chen Jining, a scientist in ecological studies, as its new environmental protection minister, replacing Zhou Shengxian. Chen, 51, was appointed as Communist Party chief of the Ministry of Environmental Protection in late January, paving the way for his formal installation as minister.

8. According to Finance Minister Arun Jaitley Andhra Pradesh has become the first state to opt for executing the National Optical Fibre Network (NOFN) on its own and the telecom department will reimburse the cost for the same.

Indian capital market regulator SEBI has recently asked individual investment advisers providing opinion on securities or public offers through TV channels or other media platforms to get them registered with it. This is being done with an aim to safeguard Indian markets from any manipulative research reports. These individuals would be registered in “Research Analysts” capacity by SEBI for the same.

10. Foreign Secretary S. Jaishankar left for his ambitious visit of SAARC countries and reached Bhutanese capital Thimpu. He is visiting four SAARC countries namely Bhutan, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan, which has been given the name “SAARC Yatra”. The visit to the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) neighbours is part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s emphasis on neighbourhood outreach.
भारत के विदेश सचिव एस. जयशंकर दक्षेस देशों की अपनी महात्वाकांक्षी यात्रा के पहले चरण में भूटान की राजधानी थिम्पू पहुँचे। वे कुल चार दक्षेस देशों, भूटान, बांग्लादेश, पाकिस्तान और अफगानिस्तान की यात्रा पर गए हैं। इस यात्रा को “दक्षेस यात्रा” का नाम दिया गया है। दक्षेस (दक्षिण एशियाई क्षेत्रीय सहयोग संगठन) देशों की उनकी यह यात्रा प्रधानमंत्री नरेन्द्र मोदी के उन प्रयासों के तहत की जा रही है जिसमें वे अपने पड़ोसी देशों से सशक्त संबन्ध स्थापित करना चाहते हैं।
पीपुल्स डेमोक्रेटिक पार्टी (पीडीपी) के नेता मुफ्ती मोहम्मद सईद ने जम्मू-कश्मीर के नए मुख्यमंत्री के रूप में शपथ ली। पीडीपी और भाजपा की इस गठबंधन सरकार में भाजपा के नेता निर्मल सिंह को राज्य का उप-मुख्यमंत्री बनाया गया है।
2. India has named Arun Singh, currently its Ambassador to France, as its next top envoy to the US and has send an agreement in this regard to the American government. A 1979-batch IFS officer, Singh will be replacing S. Jaishankar, who was appointed as Foreign Secretary on January 28 this year.

6. World’s first electric satellites were successfully lifted off by a Space Exploration (SpaceX) Technologies rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, United States. The rocket was carrying two all-electric commercial satellites built by Boeing. The satellites are owned by the French satellite provider Eutelsat and Asia Broadcast Satellite (ABS).

10. Foreign Secretary S. Jaishankar left for his ambitious visit of SAARC countries and reached Bhutanese capital Thimpu. He is visiting four SAARC countries namely Bhutan, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan, which has been given the name “SAARC Yatra”. The visit to the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) neighbours is part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s emphasis on neighbourhood outreach.

1. Union Budget 2015-16 has been presented by the Finance Minister of India Arun Jaitley. In the budget Fiscal deficit seen at 3.9 percent of GDP in 2015/16 and Current account deficit is below 1.3 percent of GDP.

According to State-run Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) and information technology (IT) solutions company Rolta India Ltd., Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) and Tata Power consortium has been selected by the ministry of defence as a development agency for the battlefield management system (BMS) project worth over Rs.50,000 crore. The BMS project, categorized as a “Make” programme under the defence procurement procedure (DPP), will be one of the largest indigenous solutions offered to Indian defence.

According to the Economic Survey for 2015-16 Retail inflation is likely to soften to 5-5.5% in 2015-16 as benign oil prices, weak global demand and increased agricultural supplies would help keep prices within limits. Consumer price inflation (CPI) which is likely to print at 6.5% for 2014-15 is likely to decline further. Our estimate for 2015-16 is for CPI inflation to be in 5.0-5.5% range and for the GDP deflator to be in the 2.8-3.0% range.

In TROPEX-2015, around 50 ships and submarines, along with 70 aircrafts from the three Naval Commands participated.

8. The Economic Survey, prepared by the finance ministry’s chief economic adviser Arvind Subramanian, was tabled in the Lok Sabha. India’s economic survey pegged that the economy is set to grow by 8.1-8.5% in 2015-16 and said inflation was now declining, while also setting the agenda for reforms needed to further drive the expansion, prune wasteful expenditure and promote productive investment.

In order to promote development of a common national market for agricultural commodities through e-platforms, the DAC has approved Rs. 200 crore for a central-sector scheme for promotion of national Agricultural Market through Agri-Tech Infrastructure Fund (ATIF) to be implemented during 2014-15 to 2016-17. Under the scheme, it is proposed to utilize the ATIF for migrating towards a national market through implementation of a common e-platform for agri-marketing across all states.

10. A 49-year-old Indian-origin lawyer has been appointed as a Judicial Commissioner to Singapore’s Supreme Court bench for two years. Senior Counsel Kannan Ramesh, will assume the position from May 22, 2015.

वित्त मंत्रालय के मुख्य आर्थिक सलाहकार अरविंद सुब्रमण्यन द्वारा तैयार आर्थिक सर्वेक्षण, लोकसभा में पेश किया गया। सरकार ने 2014-15 के अनुमानों को आधार मानते हुए 2015-16 के लिए विकास दर 8.1 फीसदी से लेकर 8.5 फीसदी तक रहने का अनुमान जताया है। अर्थव्यवस्था में अब स्थायित्व आया है। सुधारों को शुरू किया जा चूका है। विकास दर में गिरावट का सिलसिसा खत्म हो गया है और अब इकॉनमी पटरी पर लौटती दिख रही है।

In order to promote development of a common national market for agricultural commodities through e-platforms, the DAC has approved Rs. 200 crore for a central-sector scheme for promotion of national Agricultural Market through Agri-Tech Infrastructure Fund (ATIF) to be implemented during 2014-15 to 2016-17. Under the scheme, it is proposed to utilize the ATIF for migrating towards a national market through implementation of a common e-platform for agri-marketing across all states.

Six Indian women CEOs and Managing Directors, including State Bank of India head Arundhati Bhattacharya and ICICI CEO Chanda Kochchar, have been named by Forbes magazine in its 50 ‘Power Businesswomen’ from Asia who are “knocking down” walls in the traditional male bastions. According to Forbes Kochhar, 53, is India’s second most powerful banker after Bhattacharya.

Government has decided to roll out a pilot project to give a digital boost to the flagship rural job scheme MNREGA in gram panchayats to ensure its better implementation through mobile monitoring system. A total of 35,000 gram panchayats will be covered which would be given a mobile/tablet. An amount of Rs. 35 crore have been sanctioned as each mobile/tablet would be costing Rs 10,000.

1. Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu presented the Railway Budget 2015-16 in the Lok Sabha. In his first Railway Budget, Prabhu outlined a plan to invest over 8 lakh crore rupees over 5 years. The size of the Plan Budget has gone up by 52% from 65789 crore rupees in 2014-15 to 100011 crore rupees in 2015-16. There is no increase in passenger fares, passengers can book tickets 120 days in advance instead of 60 days which was available till date. In the Budget, outlay for passenger amenities increased by 67 percent, etc.
रेल मंत्री सुरेश प्रभु ने वर्ष 2015-16 का रेल बजट लोकसभा में पेश किया। कुल 100011 करोड़ रुपए का बजट प्रस्ताव प्रस्तुत किया गया है जो वर्ष 2014-15 के रेल बजट से 52% अधिक है। यात्री रेल किराया और माल भाड़ा में कोई बढ़ोतरी नहीं की गई है तथा यात्री सुविधाओं के लिए आवंटन में 67% की वृद्धि की गई है। बजट के अनुसार रेलवे टिकट 60 दिन के बजाय 120 दिन पहले बुक की जा सकेगी, आदि।

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) announced an amendment to the Telecommunication Mobile Number Portability Regulation, 2009, that will facilitate full Mobile Number Portability (MNP) in the country. Full MNP will be available across the country from 3 May 2015. Mobile Number Portability (MNP) currently allows consumers to change their service provider while retaining the same number only within a telecom circle, which in most cases, is limited to a State. Under the full MNP programme, a subscriber will be able to retain the same mobile number across the length and breadth of the country while selecting a service provider.

4. Russia and Cyprus signed an agreement to give Russian navy ships access to Cypriot ports in the Mediterranean Sea. Russian ships that will dock at Cypriot ports would mostly be used in counter-terrorism and anti-piracy efforts. The agreement was signed in Moscow after talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades.

5. Standard & Poor’s sharply raised India’s growth forecasts for the next several years. The ratings agency S&P raised its India GDP growth forecast to 7.9 per cent from 6.2 per cent for the year ending March 2016, citing as well rising investment and low oil prices. The agency also raised its growth forecast for 2016-17 to 8.2 per cent from 6.6 per cent previously.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) announced an amendment to the Telecommunication Mobile Number Portability Regulation, 2009, that will facilitate full Mobile Number Portability (MNP) in the country. Full MNP will be available across the country from 3 May 2015. Mobile Number Portability (MNP) currently allows consumers to change their service provider while retaining the same number only within a telecom circle, which in most cases, is limited to a State. Under the full MNP programme, a subscriber will be able to retain the same mobile number across the length and breadth of the country while selecting a service provider.

4. Russia and Cyprus signed an agreement to give Russian navy ships access to Cypriot ports in the Mediterranean Sea. Russian ships that will dock at Cypriot ports would mostly be used in counter-terrorism and anti-piracy efforts. The agreement was signed in Moscow after talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades.

5. Standard & Poor’s sharply raised India’s growth forecasts for the next several years. The ratings agency S&P raised its India GDP growth forecast to 7.9 per cent from 6.2 per cent for the year ending March 2016, citing as well rising investment and low oil prices. The agency also raised its growth forecast for 2016-17 to 8.2 per cent from 6.6 per cent previously.

4. The report of the 14th Finance Commission was tabled in the Parliament by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley. According to an Action Taken Report on the recommendations given by the Commission, the Centre has decided to devolve a much higher share of 42% of the Union’s tax receipts to the States. Compared to 2014-15, this will be a significant enhancement of 10% over the 32% during the award period of the 13th Finance Commission.

Under the tie-up, cab owners associated with Olacabs can avail themselves of car loans from SBI on a preferential basis, with faster loan turnaround time.

The plan covers a disbursement of $45.6 million from the Rapid Credit Facility and an immediate debt relief of about $36.5 million under the Catastrophe Containment and Relief Trust.

8. Pakistan approved an ambitious multi-billion dollar strategic economic corridor linking China to Gwadar port at the mouth of the Arabian Sea that passes through Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is the country’s biggest road and rail project and the work on it started in December when Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif inaugurated a motorway from Havelian to Thakot as phase-I of the Islamabad-Raikot section of the corridor.

- The system is designed as a self-service digital platform to deliver various services to current and prospective trainees of the vocational training system, apprenticeship trainees, employers/establishments, ITIs and other institutions, as well as States/UTs.

3. The Joint Working Group and the Home Secretary Level Talks between India and Bangladesh were held. During the meetings, both the countries agreed to enhance cooperation in border management by way of a coordinated border management plan, increased joint patrolling for reducing the crimes being committed by criminals and smugglers and higher vigil on the border by deployment of troops of Bangladesh in unguarded border areas of Bangladesh, particularly along the borders facing Tripura and Mizoram.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has given its approval for the six laning of the Chakeri-Allahabad section of National Highway in Uttar Pradesh. The total cost of this project is estimated to be Rs 1999.85 crore and total length of the road will be approximately 145 kms.

3. The Joint Working Group and the Home Secretary Level Talks between India and Bangladesh were held. During the meetings, both the countries agreed to enhance cooperation in border management by way of a coordinated border management plan, increased joint patrolling for reducing the crimes being committed by criminals and smugglers and higher vigil on the border by deployment of troops of Bangladesh in unguarded border areas of Bangladesh, particularly along the borders facing Tripura and Mizoram.

4. The government approved over Rs. 8,600 crore of highway projects in Uttar Pradesh, Odisha and Chhattisgarh. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has given its approval for the six laning of the Chakeri-Allahabad section of National Highway in Uttar Pradesh. The total cost of this project is estimated to be Rs 1999.85 crore and total length of the road will be approximately 145 kms.

The indigenously-developed missile was launched by personnel of Strategic Forces Command (SFC). Prithvi-II is the first missile to have been developed by the DRDO under the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP) and has been inducted into the SFC in 2003.

6. The Kalyani Group has announced a joint venture with Rafael Advanced Defence System of Israel. This joint venture company will be based in India. The initiative is in line with the government’s ‘Make in India’ policy and will enable the development and production of high-end technology in the country, said the company. The joint venture will be a 51:49 partnership, with Kalyani Group holding 51 per cent stake as per the new FDI norms. Recently, the government had raised the FDI cap in defence to 49 per cent. The Kalyani Group claimed the joint venture will be among the first such ventures under the new FDI limits.

5. Indian telecom major Bharti Airtel Limited tied-up with United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to provide health, education and youth-focused content to its customers in 17 African countries. In this regard, Bharti Airtel limited and UNICEF signed a partnership agreement. Their partnership is aimed at improving African population’s access to health and education-related information from various innovative projects supported by UNICEF.

6. The Kalyani Group has announced a joint venture with Rafael Advanced Defence System of Israel. This joint venture company will be based in India. The initiative is in line with the government’s ‘Make in India’ policy and will enable the development and production of high-end technology in the country, said the company. The joint venture will be a 51:49 partnership, with Kalyani Group holding 51 per cent stake as per the new FDI norms. Recently, the government had raised the FDI cap in defence to 49 per cent. The Kalyani Group claimed the joint venture will be among the first such ventures under the new FDI limits.

1. Airport Council International (ACI) has ranked Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport of Delhi as the world’s most performing airports in the 25-40 million passengers per annum (MPPA) category. For this achievement, IGI has won the annual ASI’s Airport Service Quality (ASQ) award for the year 2014. This award recognises and rewards the best airports in the world based upon Geneva-based ACI’s ASQ passenger satisfaction survey. While in this rankings, Chhatrapati Shivaji International (CSI) Airport of Mumbai also figured in the top five list.

Bhamala Buddhist Complex [Pakistan]
- Archaeologists discovered Buddhist sculptures and coins during ongoing excavation at the site of an ancient Buddhist Stupa in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in December, 2014. According to the authorities, these artifacts date back to the 2nd to 5th centuries.
- The excavation work was carried out at Bhamala Buddhist Complex in Haripur district. The Bhamala archaeological site has been declared national and world heritage site and is located near Khanpur dam, located on the Haro River.
- The Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) on December 21, 2014 collaborated with Microsoft India to transform Surat into a smart city.
- Under the partnership, Microsoft and its partners will help SMC to bring solutions for water management and urban planning, including building plan approvals.
- The city will be transformed into a smart city under Microsoft’s CityNext Program, a plan that will make citizen services more responsive, transparent, efficient and productive.
- An army-run school in Pakistan’s north-western city of Peshawar was attacked by Taliban Militants on December 16, 2014. The attack, deadliest ever by Taliban in the country killed 141, mostly school-children.
- The Pakistani Taliban, who are fighting to impose strict Islamic rule in Pakistan, operate from their hideout in inaccessible mountains straddling the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. They strictly defy western education.
- An oil spill occurred in the Sundarbans, Bangladesh on December 9, 2014 when a small coastal oil tanker sank after being rammed by another vessel from behind. This caused a spill of approximately 400000 liters of oil in the water.
- The Sundarbans was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1997 and is one of the largest mangrove forests in the world. The area is known for its wide range of fauna, including 260 bird species, the Bengal tiger and other threatened species.
- It lies on the delta of the Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna rivers on the Bay of Bengal, and is adjacent to the border of India’s Sundarbans National Park.
- The Maldives on December 5, 2014 declared a State of Crisis after a fire at Male’s sole water sewage treatment plant has led to a shortage of drinking water in the Indian Ocean archipelago.
- According to Maldives government, around $ 20 million would be required to repair the plant. India, China, and Sri Lanka supplied large quantities of fresh water to the country.
- The Maldives, a tiny island nation in the Indian Ocean is a popular tourist destination surrounded by pristine seas and turquoise-blue ocean vistas.
- The remains of Telhara University has been discovered in Bihar’s Nalanda district in December, 2014. According to the State’ Arts, Culture and Youth Affairs department which started excavation of the site in December, 2009, the university was older than Nalanda and Vikramshila universities.
- Telhara is a small village in the Hilsa subdivision of the Nalanda District in Bihar. This place was visited by the Chinese traveller, Heun Tsang in the 7th century AD, and it was mentioned as Teleadaka in his account.
- After discovery of remains of fourth century ancient Nalanda and eight century Vikramshila universities, this is the discovery of remains of third ancient university in the state.

Land Bill: BJP forms 8-member panel to talk to farmers. BJP chief Amit Shah formed an eight-member committee on Tuesday to seek suggestions from India’s farmers on the controversial Land Acquisition Bill which was earlier presented in the Lok Sabha.
Rural Development Minister Chaudhary Birender Singh introduced the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement (Amendment) Bill, 2015 which seeks to replace the ordinance promulgated by the NDA government on December 30, 2014.
The government had promulgated the ordinance making significant changes in the Land Act including removal of consent clause for acquiring land for five areas — industrial corridors, Public Private Partnership projects, rural infrastructure, affordable housing and defence.
An outraged opposition led by the Congress walked out of the Lok Sabha raising slogans against the amendment to the 2013 law passed by the then Manmohan Singh government. “This is not right that despite opposition it (NDA government) introduced the bill. It did not send the bill either to the standing committee or select committees. This attitude of the government of bulldozing bills is not right,” Congress Leader of the House Mallikarjun Kharge said.
Trinamool Congress MP Saugata Roy said his party opposed the bill. “This is the most anti-farmer and anti-poor legislation possible. In one stroke, it (government) has added a part in which four-five different kind of projects… It has taken away the social impact assessment clause.”
Biju Janata Dal MP B Mehtab said that his party was opposed to two changes in the original act – doing away with the consent clause and the scaling down of social impact assessment.
Responding to the opposition charges, Parliamentary Affairs Minister M Venkaiah Naidu said: “Minority cannot dictate over the majority. We are not bulldozing.”
“It (opposition) does not want to discuss. In June 2013, 32 state governments made a representation that the act makes development impossible,” he said, adding, “If anybody has any objection, then they have to discuss. We are with the farmers.”
Social activist Anna Hazare is also holding a two-day protest against the Modi government’s decision to amend the 2013 land law. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is also expected to join his former mentor’s demonstration at Jantar Mantar in the national capital.
Meanwhile, amid stiff opposition to government’s move to amend the land Act, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday made it clear that there was no going back. The BJP was, at the same time, preparing for discussions with NDA partners to make the legislation more “effective” and “farmer-friendly”.
At the meeting of the BJP Parliamentary Party, Modi said the bill will benefit farmers and that the amendments brought by his government were based on suggestions and demands made by Congress-ruled states and their chief ministers. He asked his party MPs to “bust the myths” propagated by opposition parties on it, sources said.
To make the land ordinance bill more effective in favour of farmers, the BJP and NDA leaders will meet on Tuesday evening to discuss and work out means to further improve it.

THE TIMES OF INDIA NEW DELHI: West Indies opener Chris Gayle became the first batsman to score a double century in a World Cup innings when he reached the landmark against Zimbabwe in a Pool B clash in Canberra on Tuesday.
The 35-year-old left-hander hit Tendai Chatara for a boundary in the 46th over of the West Indies innings to reach the mark in 138 balls.
It was also only the fifth double century in all ODI cricket and the first by a non-Indian, with Rohit Sharma (two), Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag the only other batsmen to achieve the feat.
The West Indian coincidentally scored his double century exactly on the day when master blaster hammered first ever ODI double ton five years ago in 2010 against South Africa in Gwalior.

Gayle and Marlon Samuels, who scored a century himself, surpassed the 331 shared by India’s Rahul Dravid and Tendulkar against New Zealand at Hyderabad (Deccan) in 1999.
